EVP Discover Mixtech Manufacturing Korea
Darwin co-founded Canadian Energy (now one of Canada’s largest national battery distributors) in 1987 and managed that business until 1997 when he co-founded Discover and has been tirelessly building the company as its President and CEO ever since. He also serves as a director of Canadian Energy and Discover Mixtech Manufacturing Korea Co. LTD and sits on the board of IQ Power AG. Darwin is a recognized visionary, innovator and accomplished entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience in the battery and energy storage business. He has pioneered the introduction of specialized AGM batteries for motive power applications, and has continued that leadership with the industry’s largest product offering of OEM quality Certified Advanced Energy Systems (lithium products). He is also the driving force behind Discover’s new MIXTECH EFB batteries and the recent acquisition of the MIXTECH plant in Korea. In 1997 he was recognized as one of Canada’s top 40 business executives under the age of 40.
Dean has been Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel of Canadian Energy since 2014 and was appointed to the same role with Discover in 2015. He serves on the board of both organizations. Prior to joining our team, Dean operated his own firm and worked for another law practice, focusing on commercial law and a wide variety of securities transactions including mergers and acquisitions and private offerings. Dean has also worked as an auditor for Ernst & Young as well as an accountant in industry. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and is licensed to practice law in Colorado. Dean has a Bachelors in Business from BYU, a Master’s in Accounting from the University of Virginia, and earned his juris doctorate degree from UNLV.
Steve spent the first 20 years of his career with Hankook Tire, culminating in his promotion to the Executive Director of Marketing and Sales in New York, and then President of Hankook Tire Canada. In 1995, he started Uniwell International, specializing in trade and distribution of batteries, tires and wheels. In 1997, he co-founded Discover and today remains a driving force behind the strategic direction of the Discover Group of companies. Some of Steve’s many notable achievements include playing a key role in Vision Battery’s growth from a small SLA battery manufacturer in China to the largest SLA manufacturer in the world and a public company; helping Optimum Nano become one of the largest Lithium Phosphate cell manufacturers for electric vehicles in China with a value of over $1 billion USD; and helping Orema become a major battery factory in China as part owner, financier and business partner. Steve holds an Executive MBA and is the recipient of numerous industry awards including Best Export Performance from the Korean government in 1989 and 2003.
Shawn Sauer is a successful entrepreneur and has worked as an advisor at Discover Energy since its inception and remains a major shareholder. He is also the co-founder and current Chairman and President of Canadian Energy. He has held just about every role within the organization, from truck driver to salesman to janitor, and has overseen its growth and success for over 30 years. In addition to his duties with Canadian Energy, Shawn serves as a director of Discover Canada and Discover Korea. He is passionate about building – whether it’s businesses, buildings - even Lego!. Shawn graduated from Lethbridge Community College in 1985 with a diploma in business administration and he is an accomplished multi-engine instrument rated pilot.
Heosoek is responsible for Discover’s Transportation division, including our MIXTECH manufacturing plant in Korea. He brings over 30 years of international experience and progressively increasing leadership responsibilities in global business operations. He spent the first 20 years of his career with Daewoo – a major Korean conglomerate, and built a reputation early on for restructuring and continuous improvement. He was rewarded by being named head of planning where he was responsible for establishing the business plan for entire organization. He then took over as the head of Daewoo’s international investment team, helping acquire and establish over 50 foreign business units, including such diverse interests as auto dealerships in Europe and South America, a sewing factory in El Salvador, a timber company in Myanmar and textile factories in China. He then turned his attention to domestic distribution in Korea, and led the expansion of the business into large department stores, hyper markets, and cinemas. Heeseok holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Konkuk University in Seoul.

Jeff is responsible for leading the entire life cycle from product conceptualization to the manufacturing of Discover’s Advanced Energy Systems (lithium products). Jeff brings over 20 years of product development and product management experience including senior roles in Product Management, Marketing Management and Engineering with Xantrex Technologies and Schneider Electric. AS the lead engineer at Schneider Jeff was instrumental in the development and commercialization of the mostly widely installed on and off grid inverter system in the world (Schneider XW). Prior to joining Discover Energy, Jeff was a Product Manager at Delta-Q Technologies responsible for defining and launching its next generation of highly reliable, innovative industrial battery chargers. Jeff holds a Bachelor of Applied Science, Mechanical Engineering from University of British Columbia and an Masters of Business Administration from Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia.
Huang is responsible for all CUB Energy Storage System development and project execution. Prior to joining Discover in 2013, Huang worked at A123 Systems where he was responsible for many early milestones in advanced automotive battery technology. He was responsible for completing tailpipe emissions compliance and crash testing on the first ever EPA approved aftermarket plug-in hybrid conversion kit for the Toyota Prius. He was also the lead engineer on A123 System’s first major automotive battery program, going from prototype to production launch in one year with a total volume of 3000 units. Huang brings extensive experience with battery integration, management systems, inverter controls, and microgrid applications. Huang holds a Bachelor of Applied Science and Master of Engineering, both in Mechanical Engineering, from the University of Toronto.
Kiyoon is responsible for managing all operations and production at our MIXTECH manufacturing plant in South Korea. He is one of the most experienced and accomplished professionals in both battery technology and large plant management in the global battery industry. He brings 30 years of experience with Sebang, Korea’s largest automotive battery manufacturer, with roles that have spanned from chief of production, head of product development, head of R&D, and plant manager. He led the effort to implement a TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) program throughout Sebang’s manufacturing operations which led to significant improvements in productivity. In 2013, Kiyoon took over as General Manager for Dong-A Tire, a major tire manufacturer in Korea, where he led a number of productivity improvement initiatives, including TPM. Kiyoon holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering at Chonbuk National University in Korea.
